In March 2022, I returned to Lake Erie to witness the annual ‘traffic jam’ of birds at the lakeshore. For a few nights in a row, I stood alone, surrounded by swarms of birds - organized chaos. I wanted to capture what I witnessed, but knew that it was impossible to do this.

A few weeks later, I attended my first Moku Hanga workshop taught by the great artist and teacher, Annie Bissett. Using a Hangi-to knife for the first time, I began to carve a small ‘sketch’ of the scenes that I witnessed recently. The workshop was a live-changing experience, and I am now sketching out ideas for larger wood blocks.
